The five-mile route opened on Friday 12th June 2026. It connects J42 of the M6 with the A595, with the twin goals of reducing congestion within Carlisle and opening up areas for development such as St Cuthbert’s Garden Village.

Delivered by principal contractor Galliford Try, work started in summer 2023, with the project at that time expected to come in at £225m. The final reported cost is £260m. The original target date for completion had been summer 2025, with delays put down to higher than average rainfall. The route crosses two main railway lines as well as the Caldew and Petteril rivers.
